SuperDeluxe Tokyo
SuperDeluxe, Tokyo was founded in 2002 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), David Duval-Smith and Michael Frank (Namaiki), Mike Kubeck and Atsushi Imuta (RISA Partners)
In 2002, Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture, or KDa) together with artists and designers David Duval-Smith and Michael Frank (Namaiki), and Mike Kubeck and Atsushi Imuta (RISA Partners) created SuperDeluxe as place for independent artists to facilitate and exhibit cross-platform work incorporating sound, video, dance, theatre or virtually any means of expression. SuperDeluxe’s nightly program provides a vibrant and ever-changing forum of creativity and is also the birthplace of Klein and Dytham’s PechaKucha Night.
Mark Dytham
British architect Mark Dytham and Italian-born architect Astrid Klein moved to Tokyo in 1988 after graduating from London’s Royal College of Art. Soon after, the pair formed KDa and have become known for their inventive and non-conventional building, interior, public space and installation designs. KDA’s practice was celebrated in a recent twenty-year retrospective of their work held in Tokyo’s Gallery MA in 2009, showcasing notable projects such as the Leaf Chapel, Selfridges WonderRoom, Billboard Building and Green Green Screen.
Namaiki
David Duval-Smith and Michael Frank founded Namaiki about ten years ago and have drifted slowly from irreverent high end commercial design, foolish and playful installations and exhibitions, out of the city and into the mountains where they now build food forests, sustainable landscapes and living objects. They are learning to make Japanese wild honey and eat wild boars.
Mike Kubeck
Mike Kubeck is the Executive Producer and Curator of SuperDeluxe. Born in 1971 in Fresno, California, USA, Kubeck has lived in Tokyo since 1993. He began to collaborate with KDa and Namaiki in 1998, initially founding an improvised music concert series at their shared office/warehouse Deluxe in Azabu Juban, Tokyo, which was re-imagined in 2002 as SuperDeluxe.
