HAIR STYLISTICS

HAIR STYLISTICS
noise/experimental

Hair Stylistics is the stage name of Masaya Nakahara, a multi-talented artist active as a musician, writer and painter. Born in Tokyo in 1970, Nakahara started producing his own music with an MTR and sampler around 1988.

His first release (as Violent Onsen Geisha) was a split LP from an US independent in 1990 that attracted much attention. Violent Onsen Geisha was chosen as an opening act for Sonic Youth, Beck and John Spencer Blues Explosion on their respective tours to Japan and released several essential recordings under that moniker.

In 1997, Nakahara changed his stage name to Hair Stylistics and released the long-awaited Custom Cock Confused Death in 2004. In 2008, Nahakara began an ambitious year-long ‘album-a-month’ project entitled Monthly Hair Stylistics (completed in March 2009) that is widely regarded to contain some of his best work to date. Hair Stylistics perform regularly in Japan and internationally. Nakahara also has a long-running yet seldom realised collaboration with Mike Kelly and 17th Biennale of Sydney artist Paul McCarthy.

SuperDeluxe@Artspace is excited to welcome this seminal noise musician for his first performance in Australia.
