TETUZI AKIYAMA
TETUZI AKIYAMA
Improvisation
Tetuzi Akiyama plays the guitar, highlighting both its primitive and practical possibilities by exploiting the characteristic nature of the instrument in a straightforward manner. His playing is both minimal and delicate, filled with moments of stillness between bold, mesmerising melodies.
Akiyama has performed throughout Japan since 1987 and internationally since 1995. In 1998, together with Taku Sugimoto and Toshimaru Nakamura, he initiated and organised a series of monthly concerts, The Improvisation Meeting (The Experimental Meeting) and Meeting at Off Site, which ran until 2003.
Besides making a number of solo albums that feature experiments in fingerpicking, slide acoustic guitar, atonalism, noisy experimental drone, and never-ending boogie, he has also made a wide variety of albums in collaboration with well-known artists like Jozef Van Wissem, Donald McPherson, Greg Malcolm, Bruce Russell, Günter Müller, Jason Kahn, Michel Henritzi, Phantom Limb, Gul 3, Tim Barnes, Oren Ambarchi, Martin Ng, Alan Licht and many more.
